Get your hair 'wedding ready'

It's time to lower the temperature and shield your hair from heat damage!

Minimising the heat exposure on your hair will significantly improve its condition for your wedding day. It's not about avoiding heat altogether, but rather being mindful of how we use it.

Below are my best recommendations for minimising heat exposure on your hair and ensuring proper protection when styling:

1. Allow your hair to air dry until it reaches about 80% dryness. It should be slightly damp but not wet when you begin blow drying. This method helps minimise the duration of heat exposure to your hair.

2. Use a quality heat protector on the ends of your hair. Here are a few of my top picks:

Employing a heat protector forms a protective barrier between your hair and the heat. Additionally, many heat protectors contain smoothing agents that aid in minimising frizz. Frizz is an indicator of dry hair that requires hydration. Utilising a heat protector can assist in addressing this issue.

3. Blow dry your hair to create a smooth finish – avoid simply blowing it with the hairdryer! Invest time in using a brush, applying tension, and blow drying in sections for a sleek look. When your hair is nearly dry, reduce the heat setting by one on your hair dryer and use the cooling shot on each section. The brushes I prefer to use are:

As the ends of your hair are nearly dry, it is unnecessary to apply excessive heat to them. Once you reach the ends, gently move the hair dryer away and use the brush to either pull the straight or curl them under. The heat from the brush is sufficient to style the ends of your hair without causing any damage.

4. Adjust the temperature of your hot styling tools (straighteners, curling iron/wand) to around 180 – 200 degrees. If you have fine hair, you'll require less heat for styling, whereas thicker hair will need higher temperatures.

5. Try to reduce the use of heat styling tools on your hair daily; give your hair some rest from heat whenever you can. This is easy for those who do not wash their hair on a daily basis. If you do wash your hair every day, consider experimenting with heatless curling techniques. I suggest using products from the Kitsch brand available at this link.
