Hair Extensions

Updated: Nov 11

In my experience as a bridal hairstylist, I have found that hair extensions really divide brides. Some are really keen to use them, and some are not. Let’s get into this and talk through some pros and cons so you can decide if they are for you or not.

Firstly, in this blog I’m going to be talking about clip in hair extensions rather than the semi-permanent ones a hairdresser will fit for you. I am happy to work with all types of hair extensions and can answer any questions you may have.

Let’s talk firstly about the pros of using clip in hair extensions and when I recommend them to my brides.

They are great for adding thickness, volume and length. What I love about clip ins is that we can choose how much thickness, volume and length to add as we go. Sometimes, just using a couple of pieces can make a huge difference, and honestly, no one will even know you’re wearing them. They are perfect for those who have fine hair and want to have a fuller looking style, either when having their hair up or down.

They also work well if your hair doesn’t hold a curl very well. The hair extensions work as a kind of scaffold for your natural hair which keeps the curl lasting longer.

They are super lightweight and once they’re in you’ll forget you’re wearing them. I add a little backcombing at your root and then clip the extensions into this, so they won’t slide and come out.

They can offer colour dimension to your hair. You may notice that hair that has a couple of colours running through it (that blend well together) can make certain parts of a hairstyle more noticeable. This is mostly true for plaits and twists in the hair. If your hair is all the same colour (especially darker hair) it’s hard for the camera to pick up the detail and can look quite flat.

Now, let’s have a look at some cons (not that there are many):

Clip ins are not great for people that like to run their fingers through their hair and move their hair about as you won’t be able to.

They can be costly, especially if you only plan to use them for one day. You’re looking to pay about £100 minimum for good clip in hair extensions. (I am working on getting you a discount code though, so hopefully that will help!)

The brand I recommend to my brides is www.cliphair.co.uk they offer human hair clip ins which are great quality. They offer a colour match service on their website where you take a photo of your hair in natural light, and they recommend the shade you need. They also offer a full refund if you send them back (unused of course) if you change your mind or the colour isn’t quite right, but please do check they refund policy before you buy.

If you need any help or would like to ask me anything, please get in touch.
