Hair Accessories

If you are unsure about wearing a hair accessory on your wedding day, consider this: a high-quality hair accessory has the power to transform a hairstyle into a bridal look, enhancing even the simplest style.

In this blog, I’m going to go through the different types of accessories and what I think works best and when. Also, giving my top tips and insights into what to look out for when buying your hair accessory.

Firstly, hair pins. These are my go to’s when recommending hair accessories. Why? Because they are light weight, fit well with a veil, easy to take out yourself at the end of the night and slot into hair easily and hold well. For hair pins to work you need at least a little bit of your hair up, either in a bun, ponytail or twists and plaits for a half up. The only time this accessory doesn’t work is when your hair is all down as there is nothing to slot the pins into.

Secondly, hair combs. These are great for thicker hair and slot into hair nicely. Perfect for hair up and hair down if you want the comb on the side (above your ear). The only downside of hair combs is they can be quite heavy, so make sure to look into this before you buy them. If they are too heavy, they tend to slip on hair if we haven’t created an anchor for it (backcombing or pinning a section of hair for it slot into). It can also be a bit tricky to place (but not impossible) if you want to wear the hair comb in the same place as your veil.

Thirdly, hair vines. These can look so beautiful, especially in a half up. They grip into the hair easily and extra hair grips can be added to give more security. The only downside with a hair vine is that some can be quite tricky to take out yourself. Your hair tends to get wrapped around the vine and can become a little stuck! I would suggest asking someone to help you take out the hair vine to prevent this.

Fourthly, headbands. Great for either hair up or hair down as they just slip on and easy to take off yourself at the end of the night. The only thing to bear in mind with a headband, is the fit. You don’t want it too heavy or tight behind the ears as this will give you a headache. However, you don’t want the headband to be too loose as it will slide off when you move your head! Headbands are always best to try on before your wedding day to test them out.

Fifthly, tiaras. My advice would be to make sure the tiara has a comb attachment. Sometimes, they just have loops of wire on the ends (like a headband shape) for you to pin through. However, these don’t always give the best hold for tiara’s and they may slip.
